King John’s Castle tells its story through its walls, the people who built and lived here and those who lived outside. A rich tapestry of medieval history awaits when you step inside this formidable fortress.

The stunning exhibition at King John’s Castle brings to life over 800 years of dramatic local history. 21st century touch-screen technology and 3D models are among the exciting features that will connect visitors to tales of battle, siege and warfare. Visitors can experience a dazzling array of computer-generated animations and ghostly projections as they travel back through medieval times.

On your journey through the exhibition, you will meet Nicholas the Master Mason, a lively character who may even share some of the valuable secrets of his trade or indeed set you to work! You will also meet an array of colourful characters like Willem the cheerful Moneyer, the grim Constable Roger De Lees and many more as they recount life in the castle and Limerick city over 800 years ago.

In the busy courtyard you’ll get a sense of the bustling activity that took place here. From the blacksmith’s workshop complete with tools and weapons to the thriving portal entrance at the watergate and to the north the gatehouse where goods and supplies were delivered. Explore the siege shelters and the walkway in the remains of the Great Hall of the castle built circa 1280. Step into the sanctuary of the chapel to take a quiet moment.

The highlight of any visit to King John’s Castle is undoubtedly the stunning views visitors can enjoy from the top of the castle’s iconic towers. Offering breath-taking views across Limerick City, the River Shannon and the Clare Hills, this is a view not to be missed.

Note: Last admission 1 hour before closing time
Closed on December 24th, 25th, 26th & 27th

Pre-book for visit;
It is recommended that you pre-book your visit to King John’s Castle, especially in peak Summer season, so as to avoid disappointment.
